I also created a few new (or mostly new in the case of Admiral Koris, who is very briefly mentioned in the novelization) characters to fill in gaps in the world. While Ava is of course still rather stiff and serious, she's not yet carrying the weight of losing Cera, and the opening tour thus represented an opportunity to showcase a take on her that wouldn't be possible elsewhere. As seen in this playthrough, players who are friendly rather than formal with Ava in the first two dialogue choices will unlock a few additional scenes with her as she and Kayto reminisce. With this foundation in place, I focused on a gradual buildup of tension, juxtaposing the rising dread of invasion with warm or comedic character interactions.
The result is admittedly a substantial amount of frontloaded exposition, but I feel that this was necessary to quickly ground the player in the narrative and Kayto's point of view. To achieve this, I worked to create context, initially introducing key elements of the setting such as the history of PACT and the background of Kayto's involvement with the Sunrider project. It's a major event that heavily affects the protagonist throughout Mask of Arcadius and Liberation Day, and while it receives more dramatic gravity much later on in the story, I wanted to give it more upfront punch. In the base game, it happens within a scant few minutes of starting, while the player still knows scarcely anything about the setting or characters. My chief goal for the expanded version of the prologue was to give Cera's fall more of an emotional impact as it was unfolding. Much like the novelization, which this mod will be drawing some of its content from, Refitted can be thought of as an extended take on the story. The chief objective of Refitted is to further flesh out the narrative of the series, adding new content and expanding on existing plotlines and characterization while still remaining largely true to the spirit of the original material. Sunrider Refitted is an ongoing overhaul mod project for the Sunrider series of games developed by Love in Space.
